This Social Emotional Wellbeing focused certified Indigenous Youth Yoga Teacher Training will equip Australia’s next generation of Mindful Leaders with skills to start teaching their mob practical ways to combat stress, improve social-emotional skills, support learning and boost mental, cultural, physical and spiritual health.

Evidence-based and trauma informed, Deadly Minds™ explores ways to empower physical, mental and emotional regulation. You’ll learn about body anatomy and safe stretching to prevent injury. An inclusive two-way learning setting and engaging yarning activities will help participants find their own unique way of teaching and embodying Deadly Minds™.

General Background

Learn about the Science of teaching age-appropriate Yoga and Mindfulness for growing bodies and minds. Explore child and adolescent development for ages 3-18 to build customised Deadly Minds classes at schools or in community.

Youth Yoga Teaching Techniques, Training and Practice

Actively teach developmentally appropriate and safe Mindful Movement/Yoga while fostering the joy of culturally relevant play and learning through Social Emotional Wellbeing related games. You’ll learn a variety of breathing techniques and understand how to teach a trauma-informed class to support inclusion and accessibility for every body.

Teaching Methodology

Discover classroom management techniques and learn how to develop your own lesson plans for yoga/mindful movement education at school, at home, or in the community.

Course modules

Module 1: Introduction

Module 1 of Deadly Minds digital will gently introduce you to the concept of Online Learning and Mindful Movement, specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You’ll meet your Lead Facilitator, proud Murri Gamilaraay and Maori woman Sharnell Avery, explore the different layers of your Deadly Minds Curriculum and learn more about Mindfulness and movement in a scientific and Aboriginal context.

Module 2: Teaching Deadly Minds

In Module 2 of Deadly Minds digital you’ll discover how to plan developmentally appropriate and safe Mindful Movement/Yoga while fostering the joy of culturally relevant play and learning. You’ll enhance your teaching skills by embodying the basic yoga precepts, learning about yoga philosophy, lifestyle and ethics for Yoga teachers while fostering Mindfulness and Movement as a life skill (beyond the yoga mat). Following this module you have a deeper understanding of lesson planning for Deadly Minds classes at schools, in community and on Country.

Module 3: The Power of Breath

The Power of Breath. Module 3 enhances your Deadly Minds teaching skills by providing you with practical videos and activities to learn all the Breathing Activities alongside your Lead Facilitator. Understand the difference between calming and activating breaths and how and when to teach these for best results. Following this module you’ll be fully equipped to teach over 11 breaths in a trauma-informed, culturally relevant way.

Module 4: Physical Health, Physiology, Anatomy

This Module focuses on developing a deeper understanding of the anatomy and physiology of children and teens, emphasising the importance of healthy movement patterns. You’ll learn about muscles, joints, and bones, providing essential knowledge for safely instructing yoga shapes and activities. It lays the necessary foundation for the Teaching Yoga Shapes module, where you’ll further embody Deadly Minds™ shapes. Importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to discover approaches for supporting Indigenous health and wellbeing in a culturally relevant manner.

Module 5: Yoga for Brain Development

How big is your brain? What parts of your brain are responsible for which actions? In Module 5 you’ll learn about functional areas of your brain, brain development (and risk taking) in children and teens and how to support enhanced brain function with Yoga and Mindfulness. Appreciate the positive impact of Yoga on the nervous system and brain development for growing bodies and minds.

Module 6: Mental Health

What makes me mentally healthy and strong? Where can I get support for my students or myself?” Module 6 dives into Mental Health. You’ll learn to foster an understanding of Mental Health and Trauma, appreciate the positive impact of yoga on the nervous system and gain knowledge about the impacts of yoga for Stress, Anxiety and Resilience. This module supports inclusion and accessibility for every body (and mind).

Module 7: Yoga Shapes and Partner Shapes

Teaching Yoga! This is the module that will help you embody Deadly Minds physically. You’ll learn to teach 58 Yoga shapes, broken down into Standing, Balancing, Backbending, Hip Stretching, Challenging, Winding Down and fun and collaborative Partner shapes. Physical activity keeps your heart and lungs strong and healthy, helps you become flexible, develop strong bones and maintain a healthy body and mind. Learn with Sharn how to teach these shapes in a fun and engaging way and we sincerely invite you to add your own language and style to make it yours.

Module 8: Classroom Management

Positive Classroom Management will help you guide your Deadly Minds students through breathing, movement and relaxation. In this Module 8 we’re exploring different behaviour scenarios, discover how to manage behaviour in a trauma-informed way and look at teaching resources to enrich our Deadly Minds classes.

Lesson 9: Bringing your Learning into Practice

You’ve learned all the breathing activities, know how to teach yoga shapes and have watched some practice classes in action. In this module we invite you to continue your Deadly Minds journey by practising to write some lesson plans and have a go at teaching some elements.

Lesson 10: The Business of Yoga

Let’s get down to business! In your final module of Deadly Minds you’ll get some guidance and ideas on how to get your Deadly Minds program started, what legal and business requirements you may have. Finishing this module with a reflection about your ‘Future Me’ will help you get an Action Plan in motion.
